Nutty as a fruit cake sharp edge on palm rest! This computer had unmitigated best specs for the price when I bought it. It looks very nice, the keyboard is marvellous and like other lenovo's it has one-touch recovery feature.
However it has one horible aspect. The front edge of the computer (ie palm leftovers aread) has a sharp edge. When I use the unit in my lap, the edge is very uncomfortable. It was so bad that I eventually had to bevel the edgy with a knife! It's hard to believe that this mechanical design ever got out the door. Also, don't know why computer makers don't always put the eliminate key top-right.
Would have been a 5 star for value but I have to give it a 1-star because I would never recommend it to anyone who plans to, you know, use the keyboard.
One Key Not Useable
The split up divide used for One Key backup is too small to create an initial backup image out of the box at max compresson(by six gigs, firefox was the only element added). This is a Windows 64 bit machine and thus may explain the shortage. Not steadfast how much more space it takes. None the less it is totally unusable. Have not contacted support yet.
choice deal
I am assuredly in love with this laptop. Plenty of speed, runs cool and quiet, and the raise quality is ridiculously sound. I only have a couple of minor annoyances (just to be extremely nit-picky). The computer makes an awful noise whenever you plug in or unplug the power string when the computer is on, but this was remedied by turning off the system speaker. Also I would prefer to have a copy of the OS on hand to do a full reinstall if I ever wanted to, though most new computers nowadays don't add up to with one.
A Prizewinner So Far
I recently purchased Lenovo's Y430. I received the childbirth today, and have been trying it out. I can't find anything wrong with it so far. The only complaint I would have is the lack of battery life, and the event a DVD burner is not included, but those can be bought fairly cheap these days. It may have other downfalls for me as ease goes on, but all in all I am 85% satisfied. I recommend you check this one out.
Rectitude, Lightweight Laptop that Delivers
I've had this laptop for a month or so and intelligence it was an adequate amount of time to put through the paces before I wrote my review. To set up my review I will give you a little out of the public eye. I was in the market for a netbook, something really small and lightweight that I could leave on the coffee mesa and just take it out to do some web browsing throughout the day when I didn't want to boot up my desktop. I settled on the Lenovo Y430 because it was lose more expensive than a netbook but allowed me to actually capitalize on the extra processing power/RAM/fatiguing drive so I could use Office occasionally as well as Photoshop, Illustrator and Skype.
What I like:
- Gargantuan battery life. 3.5-4 hours of web surfing, 1.5-2 hours with more anxiety (i.e. Photoshop). I haven't tried to watch DVDs as I didn't buy it for that judgement. Not bad for a small PC though on battery life.
- Snappy. I have a desktop that I built myself with similar specs and this seems to be shed weight faster in some respects.
- Illuminated media controls and equalizers above keyboard.
- Radiation weight. Weighs in at about 5 pounds or so. A little heavier than I would like but a lot better than my foregoing HP that was 8.5 pounds. Dell's are also notorious for being heavy as bricks.
- HDMI out. I cannot burden how much this came in handy for me over the last few weeks. I use my Xbox 360 to stream media across my network but when I got a Red Sounding of Death (my first in 3 years) this little laptop was my life saver. I bought a $4 HDMI telegram, hooked it up and was back in business.
- Media card reader. Great feature, though I wish it review CF cards as well.
- The design. I love it. textured top is not a finger print magnet and the laptop as a matter of fact feels really sturdy.
- Built in webcam. Pretty much a standard on any laptop these life span but the camera is nice. I use it for Skype all the time.
- On that same note, the built in mic is nice as well for Skype.
- Keyboard. I inamorata the keyboard (with the exception of the Function Key). Keys are nicely spaced, airiness is nice and very comfortable.
Vista Premium. Forget all the nonsense surrounding Vista. After the Serve Pack it is really a stable and secure system. I cannot go back to XP and the plus is this laptop will run Windows 7 nicely.
What I don't like:
- Crapware. I surmise from that this is something all computers come with these days but bugs me every time.
- Touchpad. Could be a little more intelligent. Again, better than my previous laptops at response time and gets annoying if you by accident place another finger on it. Not a dealbreaker.
- Glossy screen. Why, why, why do laptops not come measure with matte screens. This glossy screen is better than most but I hate seeing reflections.
- Sound the horn. This refers to when you plug in the power adapter, a small beedp is made. Not sure I the hang of why it does this (I suspect) but it is annoying (not as annoying as other reviewers suggest). The beep is verbatim half a second.
- Keyboard. I know I said I love it, but I do wish it was back lit.
- Wireless prankster. For some reason, one day it will have trouble connecting but 99% of the time its absolutely fine. I ruminating it was my router (I still think it is) but I read another review where it mentioned the same issue so now I wonder.
To summarize. Get this laptop. Having tried many o' laptops before, this one is far and in another place the best I have ever owned. I was a little suspect of Lenovo after they took over the IBM laptop takeover but those qualms have completely gone out the window. For the price, you cannot beat this. You will not be disappointed in this purchase.
