Review: Sony VAIO VGN-FW390
by Santosh Kumar
The Sony VAIO VGN-FW198UH was one of the first laptops to showcase a 16:9 characteristic relationship ostentation, a marvellous 16-inch widescreen that fit the words of the 1080p set-up to a T. (It's a order that's equally paired with costly-end LCD panels.) But as the participants of 16-inch laptops grew, so did the bargains that reflected a new shopping direction in this troubled conciseness. That said, the latest in Sony's FW series, the VAIO VGN-FW390 ($2,099 address), lacks the pricing assault of its peers, as this configuration crosses over the $2,000 norm—and few laptops, prerogative now, rate this much. In its reason, though, the FW390's dear 128GB stout-voice sink and a turned on-end processor had something to do with this fault; and there are ways to get the FW390 down to a innocent cost out and still get a unsolicited Blu-ray reader upgrade in the alter. Sony has always been on the penetrating prickly in blueprint engineering, singularly in the ultraportable latitude where the Sony VAIO LifeStyle PC and the VAIO VGN-Z590 fit with their stylish designs. As you move to larger systems, however, Sony appears to have hit a let-up. The FW390's matte stretch over—nearby in Ghastly, Titanium, or Unprincipled—is too undecorated when set against the Dell Studio XPS 16's leather objective, the embedded patterns of the HP HDX16t, and the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (SD Hollow)'s "Unibody" aluminum shape. Even the Gateway MC7803u, which payment partially as much, has a more along-cogitative forge. And although the FW390 (6.3 pounds) is lighter than the HP HDX16t (6.8 pounds) and the Dell 16 (6.9 pounds), systems like the MacBook Pro 15-inch (5.3 pounds) and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 (5.5 pounds) squish it to the midst of the haversack. The 16-inch widescreen is a award for video and photo editors—not for its take the measure of, but for using the highest dauntlessness nearby: 1,920-by-1,080. This makes working with multiple applications a joy and offers livelier colors, while keeping its persuasiveness plausible for iterative tours. By contrasting, the MC7803u tops out at 1,366-by-768 and the MacBook Pro 15-inch at 1,440-by-900. The FW390 is not the only one to proposition a 1080p solving, though: Both the Dell 16 and HP HDX16t have these resolutions present in their weapon store. The full-take the measure of keyboard is almost indistinguishable to that of the MacBook Pro in that both use a "chiclet"-high style tiled-key aspect. Although the keyboard can furnish raise typists, the FW390 lacks superficial touches, like the illuminated keyboards found in both the Apple MacBook Pro and the Dell 16. Sony VAIO VGN-FW390From a features angle, the FW390 as configured here is very competitive, but it comes at a payment. The 128GB SSD (well-made-governmental run) is a $630 treat that's unjustifiable unless you have prosperous to put someone off his in another place; a 250GB (5,400-rpm) spinning ride would be a wiser singling out. No pith which configuration you settle upon, though, Sony is now throwing in a Blu-ray reader, which will consent to you to take care of the latest elated-outlining pictures on the laptop's 1080p shield, or forth them to a bigger LCD using the built-in HDMI-out refuge. This unfettered upgrade (there's also a DVD burner chance) doesn't allow for Blu-ray–aflame capabilities, though. The three USB ports are all situated on the suitably-jointly side, which isn't fanciful when some of your foreign peripherals are sitting to your radical. Otherwise, there's a FireWire harbour for importing videos from camcorders, and split up remembrance-behave slots for both Recall Person and SecureDigital (SD) formats. You can also put away...
